Jourdan Dunn is pleased models now have a “voice”.

The 24-year-old actress was scouted aged 16 and made her debut on the catwalk in 2007 walking for Marc Jacobs’ Autumn/Winter range. In recent years fashion stars have turned to the internet to give fans an insight into their lives, and Jourdan is pleased she has the freedom to share her opinions online.

?Before, models were only to be seen and not heard, but now [thanks to social media] we have a platform, we have a voice,” she explained to British newspaper the Independent. “People want to get to know us, to get to know our interests. I feel that you have to use that to your advantage by becoming a brand.?

Jourdan’s schedule has been jam-packed over the last seven years, and her status has only gone from strength to strength. She earned the title of being the first black model to walk for Prada in 13 years in 2008, and also won model of the year at the British Fashion Awards.

But things came to a halt in 2009 when she announced her pregnancy and while people worried about her rise to fame, Jourdan feels her son has helped her appreciate modelling more.

?Before Riley, I didn?t enjoy modelling at all. I just did it because I liked the money and wanted to continue my shopping sprees. But my son has put it into perspective for me ? I have to do this, I want to, to set him up for life,” she admitted. “I took it for granted that I had a great career in front of me, but now I realise my opportunities – the fact that I can provide for my family and be an ambassador for sickle-cell disease and raise awareness.?

She added that one day she’d like to get into acting, and how “emotional” every season in the industry is shooting various campaigns and walking the runway. © Cover Media
